Special Agent Harold Haberfeld and Special Agent Percy Foxworth were killed in a C-54 military transport plane crash near Bakkie, Suriname, while en route to North Africa.

The agents were performing a secret mission at the request of General Dwight Eisenhower in support of war efforts during WWII. They were en route to retrieve Charles Bedaux, a French-born, naturalized American who was under investigation for cooperating with the German and Vichy governments.

The cause of the aircraft crash was ultimately determined to be mechanical failure. Nearly no remains of the 35 people aboard were found; the wreckage was strewn across a mile and a half of dense jungle.

Special Agent Haberfeld, a skilled linguist, had served one year with the FBI in its Buffalo Field Office when he died. He was survived by his wife.

I was born and raised in the same county as you, and we attended the same college- although about 100 years apart. Now we work for the same agency, and I am doing everything I can to support the mission just as you did.

Rest in peace.
