Patrolman Antonio Guzman was shot and killed near the intersection of Telephone Road and Drouet Street.
He and his partner stopped a pickup truck for driving with no tail lights. While searching the truck, a box of ammunition was found, and the patrolmen asked the driver to exit the vehicle. When the officers tried to search the driver, the driver pulled out a .25 caliber handgun and shot Patrolman Guzman in the chest.
He and his partner were able to return fire, striking the suspect four times and critically wounding him. He died a few months later.
Patrolman Guzman was a United States Army Vietnam War veteran and had served with the Houston Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife and son.
