Officer Gushe was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a robbery suspect. The suspect had just robbed a man at gunpoint on a city street. Officer Gushe caught up to the man and approached him from behind. He tapped the suspect on the shoulder and told him he was under arrest. Without turning around, the suspect reached around his left side and fired a round which struck Officer Gushe in the heart. The suspect fled the scene and evaded a massive search for him.

Officer Gushe had been with the agency for five years and was survived by his wife.
