Gregory J. Gunter

Corrections Employee Gregory Gunter was stabbed to death at FCI Petersburg in Petersburg, Virginia.

He was outside of the prison facility when he heard a radio broadcast of a riot inside the prison. He responded back to the facility alone and encountered a group of approximately 15 inmates being chased by a large group of approximately 50 inmates. He attempted to stop the larger group when he was attacked.

He was stabbed and beaten to death by the inmates who were armed with homemade weapons.

On May 1, 1984, one inmate, 24, was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life. He received three additional 10 year terms for causing a riot, assault on a corrections officer, and conveying a weapon in prison. Another was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life. The other three were convicted of voluntary manslaughter and assault charges in connection with his death. Two received 40 year sentences and the other a 30 year sentence.
