Sergeant Griffin was shot and killed during a burglary stakeout.

Sergeant Griffin and another officer were in a darkened home that they understood was to be burglarized. The other officer mistakenly shot him as he came around a corner responding to a broken window.

I was eleven years old when my grandmother and sister woke me to let me know you had been shot. I have remembered you from the days at Franklin Street Baptist Church, as you were our Royal Ambassador leader. The time we all went to Keystone Heights for camping and the snipe hunts. You are simply one of the very best men I have ever known. I was also your next door neighbor for a while. I know you have been the enjoying the glories of heaven, God bless your memory.
