Assistant Superintendent James Godwin was shot and killed during an escape attempt at the Florida State Prison.

The suspect who shot Assistant Superintendent Godwin was a suspect in the murder of Patrolman Alje Savela, of the Massachusetts State Police, on August 31, 1951. The suspect later died while in prison.

Assistant Superintendent Godwin is buried in Crosby Lake Cemetery, Starke, Bradford County, Florida.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 57th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
