Detective Patrick Gill was shot and killed as he and another officer responded to a residential burglary call. The suspects had struck several homes in the area. Neighbors who observed the men leave one home and enter another called police.

Upon arrival at the scene the officers exchanged shots with the suspects. Detective Gill was fatally wounded and the other officer was seriously wounded, but recovered.

The other officer that was wounded, Ransom Payne, later became Chief-of-Police for East St Louis, and was chief during the Race Riot of July 2,1917. Chief Payne was my great uncle, and I'm a retired police sergeant with the Mt Vernon, Il Police Dept.
