Sergeant Gemmill was killed when his patrol car was struck by a train at the North Union Avenue crossing while responding to a suspicious person call. Sergeant Gemmill's partner was seriously injured in the accident but eventually returned to duty.

Sergeant Gemmill had served with the Alliance Police Department for 2 years and had been responsible for starting the city school's student crossing guard program.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 83rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never dimishes respect.and your memory will always be honored and revered.
