Officer Gelhar succumbed to injuries received in an automobile accident on Connecticut Avenue while responding to a homicide. He and his partner were responding in an emergency car and were following a motorcycle officer who had lights and sirens. A vehicle that yielded to the motorcycle near the National Zoo pulled in front of the car and caused a collision. Officer Gelhar received major head injuries and died the next day.

Officer Gelhar had been with the agency for over nine years and was survived by his wife and two children.
