Police Officer Warren Gay was killed in a motorcycle accident while providing an escort for a Space Shuttle crew that was visiting the city to be greeted by the governor.

Officer Gay had stopped traffic at an intersection and was just starting to proceed to his next intersection when a fellow officer, also escorting the caravan, struck him as he sped to his next intersection. Officer Gay was knocked into a curb, causing his helmet to shatter. Although he claimed to be fine after the accident he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

Officer Gay is survived by his wife and two grown children.
