Howard Garlinger

Officer Howard Garlinger was killed in a motorcycle accident at the intersection of Niles and Haley Streets in East Bakersfield.

Officer Garlinger was traveling north on Haley Street when a driver traveling east on Niles turned in front of him. He struck the vehicle and was thrown into the pavement. Officer Garlinger was transported to the San Joaquin Hospital but succumbed to his injuries before arrival.

Officer Garlinger had served with the California Highway Patrol for four years. He was survived by his wife and two sons.

Officer Howard Garlinger is the first California Highway Patrol Officer to be killed in the line of duty.
