Chief Deputy Edward Furry and Patrolman Martin Randolph, of the Springfield Police Department, were shot and killed while attempting to arrest two men wanted for robbery and kidnapping.

The suspects were located at a cottage at Crystal Lake. As the deputies and officers entered the cottage the suspects opened fire, mortally wounding Chief Deputy Furry and Patrolman Randolph, and wounding a third officer. Patrolman Randolph was taken to City Hospital where he died.

One of the suspects was shot and killed at the scene and another was wounded and arrested. The remaining two suspects were eventually apprehended in Michigan and returned to Ohio. All three were sentenced to death and executed in the electric chair at the Ohio State Penitentiary on April 19, 1939.

The suspect who was shot and killed served 11 years in prison for murdering Patrolman Harrison L. Boyd of the Marietta Police Department, Ohio, on January 11, 1925. He was paroled December 6, 1936.

It's been 73 years since you left us. Your service is remembered today and I hope that all officers read ODMP at least once a month to see what brave men and women have served their communties and to honor each and every one of you. I respect what you did and why you served. Your life was cut short by people that did not deserve to be on this planet. Always remember as you watch over all law enforcement officers that they will always remember your service forever.
Watch over my son who is a LAPD officer and my daughter who is with Customs and Border Protection. I know that you will.

Semper Fi and thank you for your service...
