Police Officer Julio Ferreira-Bonilla was shot and killed while investigating the presence of two men with a high-powered rifle at a housing project.

Officer Ferreira-Bonilla was patrolling with his partner in an undercover vehicle by the Ramos Antonini Housing Project in Rio Piedras when they came to a dead-end street and saw a person running with an assault rifle. The officers chased the person on foot, resulting in a shootout between armed suspects on a roof terrace of a building and the officers who took cover behind a parked car. Officer Ferreira-Bonilla, who was not wearing a bullet-proof vest, was fatally wounded when bullets pierced the car.

He was taken to Rio Piedras Medical Center where he died.
