Corporal Fitzgerald was shot and killed at St. Mary's Market after he and his partner responded to the sound of a gun shot. When they arrived at the scene they encountered a group of 30 men who all denied firing the shot. As Corporal Fitzgerald attempted to arrest one of the men the group began assaulting the officers and then opened fire on them, striking Corporal Fitzgerald four times. 20 of the suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting.
