Corporal Richard Fitzgerald was shot and killed at the corner of Canal Street and Royal Street by a suspect whom he had just arrested for robbing a store on Commercial Alley. The suspect was subdued by a bystander.

Corporal Fitzgerald was survived by his expectant wife and two sons. His wife died four weeks later as the result of a miscarriage.
