Patrolman Harry W. Fiedler was struck and killed by an ambulance on an emergency run.
22nd and Laflin was the scene of a tunnel collapse. More than 60 laborers and firemen were trapped in the tunnel bore, 35 feet below ground.
Officer Fiedler was two blocks from the scene when he was struck by an ambulance transporting injured from the disaster.
