Chief Fennell was stabbed to death by a man he was attempting to arrest. The suspect was apprehended the same day.

Chief Fennell was survived by his wife and 12 children. He had been with the Cadwell Police Department for three years and prior to that he was an officer with the Chester, Georgia, Police Department for 22 years.
