Reserve Officer Lonnie Howard and Officer Anthony Burton were killed when their patrol car was rammed by a man who was free on bond following an earlier standoff with police.

The suspect was apprehended but committed suicide while awaiting trial.

Reserve Officer Howard had served with the North Vernon Police Department for only four months. He was survived by his parents and brother.

God bless and watch over you Lonnie as I am sure you continue to protect us from above.

Lonnie and I were brought on within a month of each other. He was so devoted and excited about his new position with the NVPD. His enthusiasim was infective. He was a well liked young man in the community and was taken fromus way too soon.
