Reserve Officer Lonnie Howard and Officer Anthony Burton were killed when their patrol car was rammed by a man who was free on bond following an earlier standoff with police.

The suspect was apprehended but committed suicide while awaiting trial.

Reserve Officer Howard had served with the North Vernon Police Department for only four months. He was survived by his parents and brother.

I never got to meet you uncle Lonnie, only heard great things from you. I remember as a boy listening about you.I've seen your badge, heard your story..i wish I could have met you. I came to pay my respect to you as I respect all the men and women who protect and serve and gave their lives.
