Patrolman Charles Farkas was shot and killed after he and his partner had spotted a suspect who was fleeing from the murder of Patrolman Delbert Thompson while he investigated a stolen vehicle.

As Patrolman Farkas and his partner were exiting their vehicle, the suspect opened fire killing Patrolman Farkas and wounding his partner. Patrolman Farkas' partner was able to return fire and killed the suspect.

Patrolman Farkas had served with the South Bend Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife and four children.

Thank you for your service long before I entered Law Enforcement with SBPD. You grandson was a member of SBPD I did some of his background check on his application for the department, and coached him Little Leage Baseball. He later transferred to Law Enfrocement in Florida,
I have known his mother and deceased father for many years and your daughter Joan speaks of you at every opportunity.
It is my understanding that your grandson Chris Jordan has made a successfulo transition from South Bend to Florida.
You would have been proud of them all.

May the Lord continue watch over one of SBPD's finest.
