Officer Estes was shot and killed as he and an unarmed guard attempted to wrestle a gun away from a shooting suspect. The man had entered the court building at 6th and P Streets, NW, and opened fire because he was upset over a $125 refund. During the struggle the guard was shot in the mouth and Officer Estes was shot twice in the chest. He was able to return fire and strike the suspect four times.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 65h anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.
