Officer Julie Englehardt was shot and killed after responding to a call from two boys who had reported a man had taken their sled away. When Officer Englehardt confronted the man he shot her. Officer Englehardt returned fire critically wounding the suspect.

The suspect was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed in a mental institution.

Officer Englehardt had been with the agency for 14 years and was survived by her two sisters.

Julie and I were friends during high school years and later. She and her mother encouraged me to learn how to knit. I remember her search for the right career, and once she found it she never stopped talking about it: she loved helping people and she really enjoyed her work. She was a courageous woman, so full of life. I'll never forget her.
