I remember Lt. Elfman. I played with his children in my own youth. I remember his strength and character at Boy Scout Troop 54's summer camp. All of us (the boys) were impressed with his demeanor and how he had kept in much better physical shape than any of our own Dads. He was the epitome of a police officer. I am amazed to realize that he was 48 when he died. He never seemed that old. I was 12 when he died. I can still remember the shock we all felt when my parents broke the news to my brother and myself. It seemed unbelievable that a man so vital and strong could be dead. Added to the irony was the fact that he was killed on the front porch of the house on Middle Road where my mother grew up, although her family was long gone. It has been almost 48 years since that awful night, but I remember Lt. Elfman as the Dad and great role model that he was and is.
