Officer Eckert was killed when his motorcycle was struck by a truck on Pratt Street. He was responding to assist a citizen when the truck entered the intersection and struck him. The driver of the truck was not charged in connection with the accident after claiming he did not hear the motorcycle's siren.

Officer Eckert had served with the agency for 5 years. He was survived by his wife and three daughters.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 55th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer. It is unfortunate that corruption was at the root cause of your death.
