Keeper Durnford was shot and killed by rioting inmates who had taken the prison's warden hostage during an escape plot at the Auburn State Prison.

Eight prisoners were killed in New York State Police later in the day during an attempt quell the disturbance and escape attempt. Several other prisoners were charged in connection with the riot and murder.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
