Trooper Donivan was shot and killed while he and three other plainclothes officers patrolled Wilton Road in Saratoga County after a rash of robberies. They were flagged down by a man who had parked a vehicle across the roadway. When the they stopped the man attempted to rob them and a gunfight ensued in which Trooper Donivan was fatally wounded. Three suspects were apprehended following his murder.
