Officer James Devine was killed in a motorcycle accident while pursuing a speeding motorist.
On February 5, 1926, Officer Devine and Officer Leo Johnson were in pursuit of a speeding motorist near Tracy when a nail punctured Officer Devine's front tire and, while traveling at a speed in excess of 70 miles per hour, he was thrown from his motorcycle and died a few days later as a result of head injuries.
Officer Devine served with the San Joaquin County Traffic Squad.
