Officer Davis was shot and killed when he stopped a man on a bicycle to question him about a series of nighttime burglaries in the area. Unbeknownst to Officer Davis, the suspect was also the prime suspect in the murder of a woman three nights earlier. When the suspect pulled out a handgun gunshots were exchanged. Officer Davis shot and killed the suspect but was also shot in the chest and fatally wounded. At the time his agency did not issue bullet proof vests.
Officer Davis had been with the agency for seven years.

Greg, it has almost been 26 years since you have gone away from us. I should know because I was six months pregnant with the niece you never got the chance to meet. I just wanted to thank you for all that you did not only for our city and society as a whole, but for what you did for me. Had it not been for your influence in my life, I would not be the person that I am today. You may be gone, but never forgotten!!!! Thanks and rest in peace.
