Chief of Police David Wilson was shot and killed when he went to answer a call about a troubled man he had helped earlier in the day.

The suspect killed himself immediately after killing the chief.

Chief Wilson had been with the Payson Police Department for 14 years and had been in law enforcement for 30 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

I will always remember the day you died. I can still remember the phone ringing that night as Mrs. Wilson was calling to tell me you died. It broke my heart. I was a broken little girl, & you became my hero. I miss you so very much, and I hope that though I have made many mistakes in my life that I have still made you proud of me. You were always there when I needed you.
