Officer Elmer Cox was shot and killed while searching for a robbery suspect in the area of Warren Street and Bishop Street. Other officers who were patrolling the area in search of the suspect located Officer Cox suffering from a bullet wound to the stomach. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wound.

Officer Cox had served with the Detroit Police Department for 8 years.

I am priviled to be among the first to pay tribute to you. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 87th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
