Officer Copelman was killed in an automobile accident while pursuing a speeding motorist in Ventura County. During the pursuit an oncoming van swerved into Officer Copelman's path causing a head-on collision. The motorcycle driver being chased was eventually apprehended and charged in connection with Officer Copelman's death.
