Chief Deputy Cooke was killed in an automobile accident when his patrol car struck the back of a truck parked on Highway 290 near Hempstead. Chief Deputy Cooke succumbed to his injuries five days later.

Chief Deputy Cooke was survived by his wife and three sons.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
