Officer Cook had just finished his watch and was walking to the Southern Pacific Freight Yard to catch a ride to his house when he observed four men chopping up a coil of copper wife. Officer Cook approached them and questioned the suspect, who answered in an evasive manor. Officer Cook grabbed hold on one suspect and placed him under arrest. The other three suspect fled. The suspect Officer Cook had grabbed then drew a revolver from his pocked and shot Officer Cook three times, killing him.
All four suspects were later apprehended Officer Cook was survived by his wife and two children.
