Officer Colson was shot and killed when he attempted to disarm a man sitting on his porch with a shotgun. As Officer Colson attempted to take the weapon away he was shot by the resident with a second gun that he had not seen. The resident then shot a second person who had come to the aid of Officer Colson.

Officer Colson, on this 90th anniversary of your senseless murder, I wish to thank you for your service. You probably would have been well within your rights to have shot the man who took your life, but you attempted to disarm him without anyone getting hurt. It shows true good character. I can only hope your murderer faced true justice, if not in this world, then in the next. He's become a footnote in history, you have become revered in history.
