Sheriff Collins was shot and killed while serving a warrant on a man who had failed to appear on a drunk driving charge. He allowed the suspect to go back into his home to get more clothing. He returned with a shotgun and shot Sheriff Collins once at close range killing him instantly.

The suspect fled into the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. He was captured the next day when officers found him hiding in the attic of a cabin near Lowgap.

The suspect was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison on February 1, 1955. He was paroled December 10, 1981.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 55th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Given the size and locale of the area you policed, it is likely you knew the man you were arresting. I am wondering what kind of life he led after his parole. I hope he was remorseful and didn't reoffend, but it must have bothered your family to see him freed. In North Carolina, because an appellate court recently upheld an old statute covering offenses in a certain time bracket which ruled that a life sentence only meant 80 years, many offenders in the 70's are going to be released with the time calculation NC uses.
Rest In Peace
