Patrolman Collins died during surgery for an injury he received to his arm while on duty two days earlier. He was admitted to Harbor Hospital for the surgery and died shortly after an anesthetic was administered.

Patrolman Collins had served with the New York City Police Department for 18 years and was assigned to the 62nd Precinct.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 70th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
