I was a block away from the site where Dick Coldren was shot and killed. It was near Immaculate Conception Grade School and all the children were out on the playground when this occurred. Officer Coldren was friends with my father Curtis LeCuru and Dick used to give my brother, Jon and I, a ride home from the Hollywood Theater in Leavenworth, so we would be safe. I had a crush on him because he was so good looking, I recall. I looked up to him and respected him so much. I knew he had a wife and children, but never got to meet them. He and another officer stopped a station wagon containing 2 occupants which they suspected was involved in a robbery as the back of the car was full of TV's and electronic equipment. I believe the other officer's name was Gaston. As Ofc. Coldren approached the suspect vehicle the driver shot Ofc. Coldren several times in his chest and little finger, killing him instantly. The suspects were apprehended at a later time. I still think of him and him family, I admired him so much for his friendliness and professionalism. Send him and his family prayers all the time.
