Patrolman Martin P. Clarke was killed when his squad car was broadsided by a speeding vehicle at the intersection of 13th Street and Paulina Street.

The 22-year-old driver of the other vehicle fled the scene on foot but was arrested at his home a short time later. He was charged with hit-and-run and reckless homicide.

Patrolman Clarke had served with the Chicago Police Department for 18 months. He is survived by his parents, brother, and sister. His father was a retired Chicago police lieutenant and his sister was a Chicago policewoman.

Marty was one of the first, in our age group, to become a police officer. As an outstanding office of the C.P.D., Marty would have went far in the department. He had such a good and fair character. God bless.
