Deputy Sheriff Louis Chiara was shot and killed when he interrupted a car theft in Battle Mountain at approximately 2:00 am. The suspects shot him in the chest and then fled the scene.

Deputy Chiara also served as night watchman for the town of Battle Mountain.

Deputy Chiara: Not sure why no postings are present from Nevada L.E. but I will chime in. Thanks for your service. Knowing the size of Battle Mountain you were probably the only deputy on duty at the time. Presently the current Sheriff's Office/Justice Center in Lander County is not far from where you died, protecting your community. Thank you for your sacrifice and your service to the great citizens of Lander County and the state of Nevada.
