Deputy Cantrell and Reserve Deputy Larry Mulkey were shot and killed after being abducted during a traffic stop. Both deputies were found in the trunk of Deputy Cantrell's patrol car suffering from gunshot wounds to the head.

A piece of paper containing the tag number of the suspect's vehicle was found balled up in Deputy Mulkey's hand. This evidence led to the arrest and conviction of the suspects.
