Special Agent Enrique Camarena was abducted, tortured and murdered by drug traffickers while working an undercover assignment in Mexico. He was abducted on February 7, 1985, and tortured until his death two days later. His body was not located until March 5 of that year.

One of the suspects who participated in his torture and murder was ordered released by a judge in the 9th Circuit Court when the judge ruled that the man had been arrested illegally. The suspect had been captured by bounty hunters in Mexico, taken to El Paso, Texas, and turned over to the DEA.

Agent Camarena was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He had served with the DEA for 11 years and had previously served with the Calexico Police Department and Imperial County Sheriff's Department in California. He was survived by his wife and three children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 27th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer. He was also your brother in green so I bid you semper fi.

Time never diminishes respect and your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace today.

The circumstances of your death both sickened and enraged me, including the release of one of your killers.

Rest In Peace.
