Patrolman William Caisse and Illinois State Trooper Michael McCarter were shot and killed following a traffic stop on Interstate 57 in Paxton.

During the stop, Trooper McCarter had called for assistance and Patrolman Caisse responded. Once on the scene gunfire erupted and both officers and two suspects were shot and killed. A third suspect was found wounded the next day.

The third suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. His sentence was twice overturned and later resentenced to life in prison.

Patrolman Caisse was survived by his wife and three children.
