During the stop, Trooper McCarter had called for assistance and Patrolman Caisse responded. Once on the scene gunfire erupted and both officers and two suspects were shot and killed. A third suspect was found wounded the next day.
The third suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. His sentence was twice overturned and later resentenced to life in prison.
