Patrolman Cahill was shot and killed where making an arrest for burglary.

Patrolman Cahill to a bakery, located at East 10th Street and Avenue B, after two juvenile suspects were caught breaking into a by owner. As the two fled they were pursued by Patrolman Cahill. A struggle ensued and Patrolman Cahill was shot and killed.

The two suspects were later apprehended and charged with murder.

Patrolman Cahill had served with the New York Municipal Police Force for about one year and was assigned to the 11th Ward, the Present day 9th Precinct.

Patrolman Cahill, you tried to the job in the correct manner and as a pioneer of today's Policing, I admire and respect you. On this 161st anniversary of your tragic murder, I can only hope that your legacy has been kept alive in the hearts and minds of your descendants. You are truly a hero.
