Patrolman John J. Byrnes, of the 11th District, was fatally shot at 8:00 p.m. on September 26, 1926, dying four days later.

Patrolman Byrnes and his partner went to investigate a burglary complaint. The officers exchanged fire with two unknown men who made their escape.

On November 6, 1926, two men were interviewed and named Patrolman Byrnes' killer who was in jail at Rochester, New York at which time he confessed.
