Sergeant Burns was killed in a motorcycle accident when a vehicle ran a red light at 4th Avenue and 8th Street and struck him. He succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.

To whom it may concern: Today I had the honor & privalage of taking a quick pic of a partial roster of the elite Columbus Police Motorcycle Officer Force. As a reflection, my Great Uncle was Sumpter Burns, who was a rather large redheaded man that insisted on riding an Indian Motorcycle, rather than the standard issued Harley Davidsons. He was fatallyd injured on Nov. 1946 in route to a call received, when a lady ran a red light on 4th Ave & 8th Street.

Hence, in reviewing the Reflection & Honor Page of Fallen Columbus Police Officers in the line of duty, I see there is no photograph of Sumpter Burns. I can oblige to provide a nice family photo via email or drop off a copy at the Public Safety building with Marie Harrell ( my former Sister in Law).
