Sergeant Burgess was killed in an automobile accident on Cumberland Hill Road in Woonsocket while transporting an ill citizen to a hospital. His patrol car struck an oncoming car head-on during a period of dense fog.

Sergeant Burgess was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He had served with the agency for just over 2 years.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 51rst anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
