Officer Burdsall was shot and killed when he stopped a car he suspected of being involved in an armed robbery at a convenience store minutes earlier. As he approached the vehicle he was shot. A police cadet riding with him exited the cruiser, retrieved his gun, and fired several rounds at the car which helped identify the suspects when they were apprehended.

One of the suspects was sentenced to death but had the sentence commuted to life. The suspect was denied parole in September 2003.

Officer Burdsall had been with the agency for 5.5 years. He was survived by his wife.
