Officer Randal Young was killed when he was struck by a car that fled the scene. He had stopped a van for a traffic violation on Pali Highway, near upper Nuuana Pali Drive, when he was hit by a car which fled the scene.
The 45-year-old driver was found the next morning asleep in his car in Waikiki, still in an intoxicated condition. He had three prior DWI convictions, and was wanted for failure to appear in court for another DWI charge. On December 2, 1992, he was convicted of negligent homicide and sentenced to 10 years with eligibility for parole after he had served five years.
Officer Young was survived by his daughter, brother, sister, and father. He was a Vietnam War Veteran.
