City Marshal James Durand succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained in November 1908 earlier when was shot while investigating claims from a woman that a man had been harassing her.

After Marshal Durand spoke to the suspect the man went and obtained a pistol. He then located Marshal Durand and shot him in the back. Marshal Durand was taken to a hospital in Anniston where he remained until dying on January 22nd, 1909.

Marshal Durand had served as the marshal of the Hobson City Police Department for 10 years. He was survived by his wife, son, daughter, and sister.

We cannot fully honor our heroes of the present without paying tribute to our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 108th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
