Police Officer Raymond Murrell was killed in a vehicle crash while responding to a larceny in progress.

His patrol car left the roadway and struck a utility pole at the intersection of Army Trail Road and Cardinal Drive. Emergency crews extricated him from his vehicle and transported him to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital where he passed away a short time later.

It is believed that bad weather contributed to the crash.

Officer Murrell had served with the Bloomingdale Police Department for less than one year and had previously served with the Cook County Department of Corrections.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Raymond was killed. To his family, please forgive the inaccuracies on my previous reflection. I had inadvertently sent it before edits were finished.

To the Murrell family, fellow officers, and all who call Raymond beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. I hope that your family knows that a nation mourned for you. You were so very young and robbed of so many years.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Murrell gave to his community and the citizens of Illinois, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on January 19, 2017.
